Bird ringing has been carried out on Lundy since 1947. Until recently this was administered by the Lundy Field Society, with which we maintain a very close working relationship. Since Lundy was re-accredited as a Bird Observatory in February 2023, all ringing on the island is coordinated by the Bird Observatory Warden.

Our activities include mist-netting of migrant passerines in the more vegetated areas at the south of the island – in Millcombe and St John's Valley – primarily during spring and autumn migration. We currently also ring Storm Petrels and Manx Shearwaters at night in the breeding colonies. There is an operational Heligoland Trap on the Terrace on the east side of the island, and we have a thermal imager that, when conditions are right, is used to locate birds in darkness and which are then caught by dazzling.

We welcome visiting ringers to assist with our work. We can also offer training opportunities for ringers with existing T or C permits, but this is dependent on the presence of qualified ringing trainers visiting the island. Due to other work commitments, we cannot guarantee that the warden or assistants will necessarily be available to supervise. Trainees are requested to discuss this with their trainer before visiting.
